The son of Samuel & Leah Elizabeth (Sunday) Beitzel, in 1860 he was a farmer living in South Middleton Township, Cumberland County. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and light eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Harrisburg September 1, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 6 as a private with Co. A, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.

He married Mary Jane Baker and fathered William Elmer (b. 08/??/70), Bertha Jane (b. 10/28/73), Anna Elizabeth (b. 01/15/79), and Harry Earl (B. 05/28/89). Cause of his death is listed as "bronchial asthma with tuberculosis."
