ELGIN - George P. Baker, 96, of Elgin passed away on March 9, 2016 at Rosewood Care Center, Elgin, IL. He was born on May 26, 1919, in Chicago, IL the son of George and Rose Baker. George was a proud Veteran, achieving the rank of Capt, in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. Returning from the service, he had worked for Illinois Bell 36 years prior to retirement. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Elgin Survivors include his 5 children: Philip (Virginia) Baker, Stephen Baker, Mary Patricia Mahoney, Connie Hopkins and John (Glorice Harper) Baker; 7 Grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; a sister: Luella Malloy; along with many nieces, nephews and family, and a special thanks to Rossitza Peneva, his longtime care giver. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Mary Jean Baker in 1998; and a son in law: Mel Hopkins. Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday March 16, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Elgin with Rev., Christopher Kuhn officiating. Burial will be private at Mt Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4-7:00 P.M. at the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, and on Wednesday, at the church, from 10:00 A.M. until the time of mass. Memorials may be made to the church.
