YOUNGNSTOWN — Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Columba Cathedral, Youngstown for Benedict C. Franzetta, retired Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, who died Tuesday September 28, 2006 at the age of 85.

Bishop Franzetta was born August 1, 1921 in East Liverpool, a son of Charles and Josephine (DíAlessandro) Franzetta. He attended Garfield Elementary School and East Liverpool High School; George Washington Night School in New York City; and St. Charles College, Catonsville, MD; St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland.

During World War II, he worked as a civilian employee of Army Corps of Engineers. Bishop Franzetta was ordained to priesthood in April 29, 1950 at St. Columba Cathedral by Bishop James McFadden. He was elevated to Monsignor in 1961 by Pope John XXIII. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Youngstown on July 29, 1980 by Pope John Paul II, and ordained Bishop on September 4, 1980 at St. Columba Cathedral by Bishop James W. Malone. Bishop Franzetta retired on September 4, 1996.

Following ordination, Bishop Franzetta served as associate pastor at St. Anthony Parish in Canton from 1950-1957; and St. Mary Parish in Conneaut from 1957-1958. In 1958 he was named Vice Chancellor by Bishop Emmet Walsh. In 1960 he was appointed Director of the Diocesan Family Life Bureau and Priest Conductor of the Cana Program, and Director of the Diocesan Family Life Clinics in 1965. He became Chancellor in 1965, and the first Diocesan Vicar for Finance in 1966. Bishop Franzetta served as administrator of St. Joseph Parish (later the Newman Center) in Youngstown. He was named Vicar General in 1979. He also served as Director of Diocesan Cemeteries. Bishop Franzetta was a Diocesan Consultor, serving as Executive Secretary for a term, and was Executive Secretary of the Priests Retirement Board and the Financial Advisory Board. He served as a member of the Priests' Council and the Diocesan Finance Council. He also was a member of the Financial Committee of the Ohio Council of Churches. Bishop Franzetta had served as a member of the Mahoning County Citizens Advisory Committee and the Youngstown Area Community Action Council. He was Faithful Friar for the Msgr. John W. Klute general Assembly of the Knights of Columbus.

Bishop Franzetta leaves a sister, Catherine Teusink; a sister-in-law Helen Franzetta; nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph and two sisters, Nellie Domski and Rose Caccioppoli.

Bishop Franzetta was known for his love of the opera and for animals. He enjoyed traveling, having made numerous trips throughout the world. Calling hours were held on Monday, October 2, from 1 to 7 p.m. at St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood Street, Youngstown with a Prayer Vigil at 7 p.m. Calling hours were held on Tuesday, October 3, form 9 a.m. to noon at the church. Contributions may be made to the Bishop Benedict C. Franzetta Priestly Formation Fund, which supports vocations to the priesthood, at 144 W. Wood Street, Youngtown, Ohio 44503. Arrangements were entrusted to Rossi Bros. Funeral Home, Boardman Chapel.
