BELLEVILLE, N.Y. -- Alma "Kit" Smith, 82, of 7793 Lake St., died Wednesday in the Samaritan Medical Center, she was admitted on Sept. 21.

Born October 6, 1923 in Canton, a daughter of Stanley and Fana MacQuade, Cornell, she was a 1942 graduate of Canton High School and a 1946 graduate of Potsdam State Teacher's College.

She began her teaching career in Belleville, she met William G. Smith and they were married on June 27, 1947 in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Canton.

She taught at Belleville Central School for 33 years, retiring in 1980. They had lived in Belleville all their married life and they spent summers at their cottage in Snowshoe at Henderson Harbor.

She enjoyed reading and her music, she played the saxophone with the Triple H Band, and prior to that with the Boomer Band both with members from the South Jefferson area. She started writing books for children, because she had enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, William; a son, Barry G. of Woodville; three daughters and a son-in-law, Melanie S. and Gregory Golding of Henderson, Gail L. Smith of Phoenix, AZ, and Janine A. Smith of Adams; a sister, Dorine Lord of Ogdensburg; six Grandchildren, Andrew J. Naklick and Alec J. Quinn both of Watertown, Lauren M. Smith of Las Vegas, NV, Tyler A. Quinn and Hannah K. Quinn both in North Carolina, and Christopher M. Boylan of Phoenix, AZ, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Betty Jane Lain, and four brothers William, Albert, Stanley, Jr. and Jack Cornell.

She was a member of the Belleville United Methodist, a member of the church choir and the United Methodist Women's group. A member and Past Matron of the Belleville Eudora Chapter #136 Order of the Eastern Stars. A member and former secretary of the Belleville Education Association.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Ellisburg Cemetery. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.
