Gale and Mary Brennan's family grew to include eleven children, all of whom attended St. John Vianney Grade School in Brookfield and either Divine Savior Holy Angels High School or Marquette High School in Milwaukee. Once her youngest child was enrolled in elementary school, Mary resumed her career as an editor. She was employed in that capacity at the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans in Brookfield for more than 20 years. Her retirement was commemorated at a gala celebration held at the Wauwatosa Women's Club in 2002. In retirement, among many other pursuits, Mary served as a volunteer tutor at the Laubach Literacy Center in Milwaukee.
Gale Brennan died in 1990. Gale and Mary's oldest child, Katherine Dillig, died in 2010; Peter, an infant son, died in 1959. Mary Brennan's surviving children, who were at her side when she passed from this life (and their respective spouses), are Bridget (Douglas Jensen), John (Kaori Yashiro), Brian (Nola Barber Brennan), Patrick (Brigid Brennan), Maura (Michael Macander), Maggie (Joe Delia), Sheila (Kevin Conroy), Terry (Brendan Conroy), Joel (Audra Millen Brennan) and Sarah (Brett Lankford). Mary's children and their families, including her 34 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, join her other relatives and her many, many friends in mourning her passing and honoring the memory of a gentle, gracious, open-hearted woman whose legacy will surely endure.
Mary's family is deeply grateful to Dr. Antony Ruggeri and Dr. Federico Sanchez, among others, for their kind and conscientious care during her long illness. Also, to Chris, Jessica and the entire staff of the Aurora Visiting Nurse Association Hospice Program, whose compassionate support made it possible for Mary to live out her days in the relative tranquility of her own home.
Those who might be moved to send flowers are asked to instead consider making a donation to Literacy Services of Wisconsin (www.literacyservices.org) or First Stage Children's Theater (www.firststage.org), in memory of Mary Brennan's lifelong love of learning, literature and the arts.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 12 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Brookfield (1755 N. Calhoun Rd.) from 3 PM until 5:45 PM, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 6 PM. Private family graveside services at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc, WI.
