Swedish patriarch. August T. Anderson, born in Vrena village, was a merchant from the Nyköping area of Sudermania (Södermanland). As an adult, August (originally Johansson and Jansson) adopted his father's Andersson as a family name, and in doing so dropped the second 's', as was the custom in his region at the time. He also spelled it Anderzon at times. He married Hildegard (Hilda) von Reis in 1876 and they moved to Enköping. The couple had six children, of whom the first, a girl, died in infancy. In 1889 they were living in Floda near Katrineholm, when Mrs. Anderson died of pneumonia at only 34 years of age, leaving August alone with their five children aged 1 to 11. Anderson, who had not always been kind to her, deeply mourned his wife's passing and never recovered from the grief. He was unable to care for his children himself and other relatives had to take change of their continued upbringing. He moved to Stockholm, where his sons tried to set him up in business, but without much success. August Anderson died in Stockholm at 55 years of age, living on Queen Street (Drottninggatan) in St. Clare's Parish (Klara). For a gathering of descendants there on the 100th anniversary of his death to pay tribute to his memory, two great-grandchildren came all the way from England.
