George was the youngest son of Cornelius and Elizabeth (Smallwood) Voice from Five Oaks, Billinghurst Parish, Sussex, England. The family emigrated to Canada in 1834 as part of the Petworth Project, a project started in England to populate to frontier of Canada in the province of Ontario. They traveled on the ship British Tar from Portsmouth, settled in Woodstock, Ontario. The family stayed in the cold north for two years then traveled further south to a new frontier town which became the bustling city of Chicago within a few decades.

George married Tamma Adel Foster
