"Helen Marie Spath, 83 years, of North Bend, Nebraska died Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Helen was born June 20, 1932 in Osceola, Iowa to Gerald F. and Reba (Glenn) Curnes.

Helen moved to the Scribner area at the age of five and was raised by her great aunt and uncle, Ora and Edd Dunaway. She was a 1950 graduate of Scribner High School and attended Wayne State College for two summers to receive her Normal Teaching Certificate. Helen married Harold C. Spath November 5, 1950 at the First Congregational Church in Scribner, Nebraska. Harold died July 25, 1989. Her husband entered the US Army shortly after their marriage and she taught at District 27 at Webster, Nebraska. When Harold returned from Korea they lived in Tacoma, Washington until his discharge. They farmed west of Webster until Harold's death. Helen moved to North Bend in 1990. She worked at Birchwood Manor in North Bend until retiring in 2003.

Helen was a former member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Snyder, Nebraska where she was active in Ladies Aide and Sunday School. She became a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend when she moved there. She was a member of V.F.W. Auxiliary in Snyder for twenty-five years then transferred to North Bend V.F.W. Auxiliary Post #8223 and was a former President of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She was a charter member of Morse Bluff/North Bend Veterans Memorial Park Committee.

Helen is survived by sons, Fred (Doreen) Spath, Urbandale, Iowa, Jim (Mary) Spath, Webster, Nebraska and Steward (Kris) Spath, Eagle, Nebraska; daughters, Rebecca (Warren) Renner, Webster, Nebraska and Treva (Larry) Farris, Nebraska City, Nebraska; daughter-in-law, Karen McVicker, Hampton, Iowa; twenty grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and one great grandchild on the way.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her guardians; husband, Harold; son, Roger Spath in 1998; sister, Geraldine Curnes; and one great granddaughter, Jayde Deterding.

Funeral service at 10:30 A.M., Monday, March 21, 2016 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend. The Rev. Jonathan Ripke will officiate. Visitation Sunday from 4 PM to 8 PM with family receiving friends from 6 PM to 8 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Bend and will continue Monday one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial at 2:00 PM at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Snyder, Nebraska.
