Obituary from The Flora Journal-Record, July 24, 1924:

Thomas M., son of Thomas and Lucy Broyles was born in Mercer county, Ky., August 31, 1823 and died at his home in Wayne county, Illinois July 15, 1924, age 100 years 10 months, 16 days.

He was united in marriage in May, 1843 to Martha Ann Allen, who died Sept. 10, 1855. To this union was born five children, James A., Mary F., Paralee, William H., and David. Three of these ara living, Mary F. Stanford of St Elmo, Paralee Emery of Charleston, and David Broyles of Morrison, all of Illinois. He was married April 20,1857, to Elizabeth Gyger, at Bedford, Ind. who died April 29, 1865. To them were born five children, Julia A., Henrietta, Thomas L., Elvira and Zachariah, who died in infancy. Of these one survives, Elvlra Lefever of Iowa. He married Martha J. King October 26, 1868 in Wayne county, who survives him. To this union were born eight children, Emily, John E., James A., Walter A., Alice P., Sarah J., Jessie and Samuel. All af these are living, Emily, James, Alice and Sarah of Illinois; Walter in Idaho: John and Jessie of Iowa. There were also three step-children, one of whom is llving.

He left Kentucky, going to lndiana in 1845, later on about 1855 coming to Illinois, settling in Wayne county, where he Iived almost continuously for 69 years, a highly respected and honored member of the community.

He professed faith in Christ at the age of I8 years, uniting first with the Methodist church, later on uniting with the Missionary Baptist church and continuing in the faith for 70 years, studying his Bible and trying by the example his life to help his friends and neighbors. He continued to be a fairly strong man active up to 98 years of age, the last year or more being confined to his bed, and tenderly cared for by his wife and children. He was an upright aad earnest man, a good neighbor, a kind and loving husband and father. A patriarch of 100 years and more, each year he held a reception on his birthday to all comers, which grew to a vast celebration of county-wide fame, 3OO or 400 people visiting him and expressing best wishes. All honor should be given to our older generation of which he was the last in this section.

He leaves to mourn his departure a wife, 18 children, six of whom preceded him in death, a host of grandchildren, several great grand children and a number of great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at Indian Prairie Baptist church in the presence of about 450 or 500 people by Elder J. R. Kessel and Elder L. Tucker.
