Surfus, George J.

George J. Surfus, age 94, formerly of 1333 N. 10th Street, Manitowoc, died Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

He was born on October 10, 1921 in Manitowoc, son of the late George & Elizabeth (Schimdt) Surfus Sr. He served in the United States Army from August 10, 1942 until his honorable discharge on December 2, 1945. George also served the United States Merchant Marines aboard Great Lakes vessels: Colonel, Frontenac, Michigan, J.H. Sheodle and the W. G. Mather working as an oiler, sailing Lake Michigan from Duluth, MN down to Cleveland, OH from 1946 to 1950. He attended School of Vocationial and Adult Education, graduating in 1955 with an Apprentice as Automobile Mechanic for the American Motor Garage. On October 23, 1948 he married the former Marian D. Namz at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on December 3, 1974. He later married the former Helen M. Gruber on August 13, 1983 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. She also preceded him in death on January 6, 2015. George was employed at Hamilton's of Two Rivers for many years until his retirement. He was a member of the Manitowoc Fraternal Order Eagles Aerie #706, Knights of Columbus #710, V.F.W. Otto Oas Post #659 and St. Francis of Assisi Parish. George enjoyed reading, woodworking, playing cards and CB radio. He was willing to try anything, including scuba diving in Lake Michigan. Through Army training he gained interest in electricity. He was friendly and aimed to please.

Survivors include one step-son: David Gruber and his wife Jody Smolens, Portland, OR, one sister; Grace Brachmann, Manitowoc; one sister-in-law: Mary Ann Ignera, Manitowoc. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.

George was also preceded in death by two brothers and sisters-in-law; Walter and Marion Surfus and Lester and Grace Surfus, two sisters and brothers-in-law; Marie and Wilfred Chase and Mae and Stanley Pozorski, two brothers-in-law; Kenneth Brachmann and Kenneth Ignera; and one sister-in-law: Doris Lyons and her husband Tom.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo (1121 North 14th Street) Manitowoc. Military rites will be accorded by V.F.W. Otto Oas Post #659 following the Mass. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Dave Pleier with burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.

The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo (1121 North 14th Street) Manitowoc, from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2016 until 11:00 a.m.
