L. Oscar Dennis passed away at the Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Maryland, on Thursday evening, September 20, 1917 at the age of 37. The motorcycle he was operating was struck on Tuesday evening, September 18, by an automobile operated by Mr. Harry Doubs. The accident occurred at the area known as "Death Curve" on "Old Route 40" below Funkstown, Maryland. Oscar Dennis suffered a broken left leg and a gash on his right leg, but apparently succumbed to unknown internal injuries.

Oscar Dennis was survived by his wife, Essie Virginia (Sours) Dennis (whom he married on August 24, 1904) and his 5 children, Edna, Ralph, Wilbert, Hazel and Woodrow. He was a resident of Charles Town, West Virginia, the son of George and Bettie A. Dennis and the older brother of Luther Amos Dennis and Robert S. Dennis, all of whom survived him.

He was buried in Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town on Saturday, September 22, 1917. The Rev John Shadrach Alfriend officiated. To date, his exact grave site in Edge Hill Cemetery has not been located, but records do indicate that he was interred there on 9/22/1917.
