Charleston (South Carolina) TELEGRAPH, Monday, March 16, 1795, page 3.
Thomas Wier II later wrote that the ship arrived in Charleston harbor on Sunday, St. Patrick's Day 1795, and "church bells were ringing."
St. Patrick's Day was technically Tuesday, March 17, though possibly it was celebrated on Sunday, March 15. Or perhaps they did not disembark the ship until Tuesday? Or possibly his memory was faulty when he wrote of it years later. Our interpretation of what he meant by "St. Patrick's Day Sunday" should not misconstrue that the date was actually on St. Patrick's Day, March 17.
Evidently the ship arrived on Sunday (as he said), but it was March 15, as verified by the newspaper item dated March 16.
