Mary Christine Barinaga (Larsen) “Christine”, 78, joined our Lord on Monday, March 9th, 2015, after a 3 year battle with lung cancer.

Christine was born at home on March 27, 1936 to Mildred and Orval Larsen in Gooding, Idaho. She was the oldest of three children and enjoyed a happy childhood. Her father worked for the Union Pacific Railroad Company, moving the family several times for work in Idaho and Oregon, ultimately settling in Cambridge, Idaho. Christine enjoyed fishing, board games, reading, and playing cards with her grandfather Chris Larsen. She was proud of her German, Danish and English heritage.

Christine was athletic, playing on Cambridge’s basketball and softball teams. She played the saxophone in the Cambridge High School band, as well as in a dance band that played at community dances in Indian Valley and Cambridge. Christine held a variety of jobs, including ushering at the movie theater, weighing grain trucks at the Cambridge Grain Elevator, and clerking at the grocery store. She learned to drive in her parents’ 1936 Plymouth and reported many “close calls”. She loved being a “big sis” to her brother Dick and baby sister Susan.

During her adult life, Christine lived in several different parts of the country including Maine, Arkansas, New Hampshire, and Oregon before settling back in Cambridge, Idaho. She was briefly married to Emory Hutchison, and lost a son, George Emory, during childbirth. Christine later married Gail Miller, and moved to the east coast. While living in Portland Maine, Christine attended the Gray’s School of Business and they adopted a daughter, Kelly Irene and a son Scott Barry. Once returning to Idaho, Christine worked for the Cambridge School District as an administrative assistant, and then for the Head Start program in Weiser, Idaho.

In 1968, Christine married a Basque sheep man named John “Jack” Barinaga, making their home in Cambridge, Idaho. Christine and Jack had three more children, Mary, John and Louis Barinaga. In addition to raising their five children, she assisted Jack with the family sheep ranching business, cooking for lambing and sheering crews, preparing special holiday care packages for the Basque and Peruvian herders working far from home, and managing the daily operations. Christine was active in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church’s Altar Society and also the Cambridge Booster Club. Christine and Jack didn’t miss a single sporting event of their children’s, often driving snowy roads to watch their kids play and making the long treks to several state tournaments.

She always raised a large vegetable garden, filling up the family’s root cellar with her canning every year. She loved all animals, often taking in stray cats and feeding birds. She crocheted many beautiful afghan blankets and loved trying out new recipes. The Barinaga’s lived in Cambridge until 2005, and then retired to Payette, Idaho. They enjoyed traveling to Portland, Seattle, and Worley to spend time with her children and grandchildren and socialized with her many close friends. Christine loved to make road trips with friends and to play the slot machines in Worley, Idaho and Jackpot, Nevada.

Christine was a devout Catholic and a longtime member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church parish in Cambridge, Idaho, and, more recently, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Payette.

Christine is survived by her children, Dr. Mary Barinaga (Doug Rigby), John Barinaga, Louis (Corinne) Barinaga, Kelly Baker; seven grandchildren, Brett, Antonio, Nicholas, Xavier, Jack and Sophia Barinaga and Cassie Baker; her brother, Dick Larsen; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat Txo Txo.

Christine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack; her sister Susan Angel (Larsen); and her sons, Scott Miller and George Hutchison.
Christine’s family extends a special thank you to the staff of Legacy Hospice in Payette and Boise, especially June, Justine, Sue, and Sharon. Hospice played a pivotal role in her ability to stay at home and have excellent quality of life until the end.

Funeral services will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Fruitland, Idaho, on March 21st with a Rosary at 11am and a funeral mass to follow at noon. Services under the direction of Lienkaemper Chapel, Ontario.
