James lived in Ellamore until he joined the army in 1948. He served for 26 years including a tour in Korea. He moved to Levelland and worked for over ten years at the Levelland State Bank as well as doing maintenance work for the first Baptist Church. In 1951 he married Leona Helen Grandinette Felt. There were two children from this marriage (Barbara Jackson and Kenneth). After a divorce in 1968 James married Rachel Unamae Berryhill on July 16, 1968. Rachel died on September 29, 2002. There were no children from this marriage.
