Newspaper publisher, printer, editor, state senator (13th district), Meriden Tax Collector, director of the Red Cross at Havana, Cuba, author, organizer of banks, and extensive traveler. Came to Meriden, Connecticut in July 1865. Son of Henry Atwater and Catherine Fenn. Married Helena J. Sellew in 1879. Their one son, Dorance Keith Atwater, was drowned in 1900. Besides his wife, his nearest surviving relatives were two nieces: Mrs. George Lamb and Mrs. Howard May of Waterbury.
