His father, grandfather and three great uncles all were carpenters. His father came to Kansas from Kentucky in 1881,and worked for contractors in Topeka until the early 1900's, when he formed J.H. Newman Construction Co., building and remodeling residences, store buildings and store fronts. A son took over the business in 1924 and continued it under the name of Ernest L. Newman Builder of Homes. In 1938 Ernest moved to Wichita, where he still is engaged in contracting.
Graduated from grade school and Topeka High School, James H. Newman began serving as an apprentice under his brother, Ernest, when he was fourteen years old. He continued working for his brother until 1933, when the depression stalling the building trades and dashing his aspiration of becoming an architect, he began selling appliances. However, he studied drafting for three years. In 1943 he entered the U.S. Navy and served two years in a supervisory capacity with the Sea Bees. Discharged in 1945, he began contracting in Topeka, but because of the material shortage at that time, took a job as carpenter at Winter Veterans Hospital. In 1951 he reentered the contracting field under the name of The James H. Newman Construction Company, specializing in remodeling and general repairs, the erection of custom-built homes, and the planning of remodeling and new work. The firm was incorporated January 30,1953, with Mr. Newman as president; Gordon A. Behner, Vice president, and Lydia M. Newman, secretary-treasurer.
Active in church affairs for the last twenty-three years, M. Newman and his family are members of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, of which he is a trustee and was chairman of the building committee for the new church building at 2915 West Eighth Avenue. He also is a member of Topeka Lodge No. 17, A.F. & A.M.; Topeka Chapter No. 5, Royal Arch Masons; Zabud Council No. 4, Royal & Select Masters; Topeka Commandery No.5 Knights Templars; Arb Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. and Capitol Post No. 1, American Legion. Woodworking, drafting, golf and bowling are his hobbies.
He was married November 1, 1933, to Lydia M. Barcellina who died September 8, 1956. He has a son, Gary James Newman, age 16, a student in Topeka High School.
