Thurman Elwood Brock, 86, of New Bern, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, the first day of spring, March 20, 2016.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 on Wednesday morning, March 23, 2016 at New Bern Memorial Cemetery.

Thurman was the oldest of four children of the late, George Adam and Lorene Lockamy Brock. He was raised on a farm in Cumberland County and graduated from Central High School in Fayetteville, NC. From 1948 to 1951, Thurman served with the United States Army and was stationed in a MASH unit in Korea during which time he received the Bronze Star and Korean Presidential Citation for his outstanding service to our country.

Following his service, he completed his B.S. degree in Agriculture Education at N.C. State University, his Master's degree in Guidance at East Carolina University, and his doctoral degree in Community College Administration at N.C. State University.
From 1965 to 1990, Thurman served as the founding President of Craven Community College and its predecessor schools. Of his many accomplishments there, he was particularly proud of the establishment of the public radio station WTEB, "Where Tomorrow's Education Begins."

For over 40 years, he enjoyed his membership and service in the New Bern Noon Rotary Club, where he was a three time recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow. He was also involved with the New Bern-Craven County Chamber of Commerce, the New Bern Lions Club and the New Bern Salvation Army.

He was a longtime member of West New Bern Presbyterian Church where he served as an ordained deacon and elder.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Agnes Barrow Brock; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Brock of Memphis, TN; brother, Kirby Brock of Wade, NC; sister, Nell Brock Harrington of Fayetteville, NC; sisters-in-law, Linda Brock of Clayton, NC, Thelma Speight of Kinston, NC, Carol Trammel and husband, Larry of Chapel Hill, and Faye Stewart of Roanoke, VA; brothers-in-law, David Barrow and wife, Margaret of Greenville, NC and Drew Barrow and wife, Margie of Snow Hill, NC; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Thurman is preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Gene Brock of Clayton, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to West New Bern Presbyterian Church Youth Program, 1701 Lucerne Way, New Bern, NC 28560 or to the Thurman E. Brock Schlorship Endowment through the Craven Community College Foundation, 800 College Court, New Bern, NC 28562.
