Harold R. McDonnell, age 89, a Manitowoc resident, died Monday evening, March 21, 2016 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.
He was born on July 2, 1926 in Manitowoc, son of the late John and Ida (Backhausen) McDonnell. Harold was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Class of 1944. He was a member of the C.Y.O. (Christian Youth Organization), during high school and participated in its boxing program at the Old Terrace Gardens on New Years Eve. While at Lincoln, Harold played basketball and football and was the most valuable player in football during his senior year. Harold served in the United States Navy during World War II from October 1944 until June 1946 on a Naval Repair Ship in China. Before leaving to serve in the US Navy, Harold signed with a Philadelphia Phillies Scout as an outfielder. On September 26, 1953 he married the former Frances Schmatz at St. Casimir Catholic Church, Northeim. Harold was employed as a meter reader with M.P.U. and later as a custodian at Sacred Heart Catholic Church/School for 21 years. Harold played softball for 12 years retiring because of his job reading meters. He joined the Kenny’s Club Softball Hall of Fame on Sunday, August 7. Harold was a 20 year member of Maritime Museum and also enjoyed walking, golfing and fishing.
Survivors include his wife: Fran McDonnell, Manitowoc; one sister: Mary Lettenberger, Port Washington; and a brother and two sisters-in-law: James & Nancy McDonnell, Manitowoc, Jean McDonnell, Manitowoc. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Arnie McDonnell, Kenneth McDonnell, Lawrence “Pat” (Dell) McDonnell, Earl (Viola) McDonnell; an infant brother: Peter McDonnell; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Joseph & Mary Schmatz.
Cremation has occurred at All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2016 at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Memorial Service will be the Rev. David Beaudry.
