DC-9 airline crash in New Hope, Paulding County, Georgia on April 4, 1977, flying from Muscle Shoals, AL to Atlanta, GA. The pilots and 61 passengers were killed by impact forces and fire, as well as 8 people on the ground. 20 of the passengers survived as well as both flight attendants. One passenger initially survived the crash but died on June 5, 1977. A seriously injured person on the ground died about a month after the crash. The NTSB concluded, "that the probable cause of this accident was the total and unique loss of thrust from both engines while the aircraft was penetrating an area of severe thunderstorms. The loss of thrust was caused by the ingestion of massive amounts of water and hail which in combination with thrust lever movement induced severe stalling in and major damage to the engine compressors."Southern Airways passenger from D.C. who was killed when Flight 242 crashed after an emergency landing in New Hope, Gerogia. The DC-9 had been crippled during a severe hail storm which destroyed both engines and cracked the windshield. Seventy-two people were killed, including people on the ground.
