In the countryside near Jacksonville, Alabama, on a cold December morn, Hazel came to be the first daughter of Jim and Lola Dee Aderholdt. Her brother, Ferrol, was there and Gowan watched from Heaven (arriving there at age four.) Brother, Wendell, and sister, Eunice, joined the family later. Hazel remembered more about her childhood than anyone could believe. And it was awesome...walking miles to school with Ferrol, building fires on the trail to keep them warm along the way. To hear Hazel tell it, seems she and Wendell shared sibling rivalry from an early age. Eunice was a beautiful, quiet, talented sis.

In high school Hazel skipped a grade, graduating as valedictorian then marrying her first love, Tom Shaw at age 16. Two children later, (Clayton and Wanda,) Hazel moved in with her parents, leaving Tom, and going to work (for $12 a week at J. C. Penney). Hazel met Herschel Johnson on a ride home from work one evening and fell in love with the handsome country lad from Roy Web who sometimes rode his prized horse out to Aderholdt's Mill Road to court her. Love blossomed and Hazel (and Wanda and Clayton) married Herschel. With the trials of the Great Depression they moved from Oxford to Collinsville,(where Nancy Dee was born and became the apple of Herschel's eye,) to Fort Payne, to Gaston, to Gadsden and finally, alas, back to Jacksonville, to a country grocery store and gas station owned by "JimDaddy" at Bonnybrook. Events followed which included moving the little house and store back some number of feet so the big highway could pass. The house on Aderholdt Lake was expanded to include a Colonial front with white columns, a big lawn with weeping willows, and a circular drive. To Hazel's surprise, Wanda married a Texan and moved away, Clayton married a lass from Japan, then five years later Nancy eloped (at 16) with the love of her life, John Bullock.

Hazel, always an entrepreneur, continued her storied career when Herschel developed serious health problems. Taking a small savings, Hazel opened her first dress shop. Her lifetime love of FASHION took her from dress shop to dress shop in Jacksonville, Anniston and Oxford. When the clothes did not sell, she wore them, as you well know! (including but not limited to fur coats and jeweled evening wear!) Hazel was without a doubt, a self made businesswoman. Speaking of moving things, Herschel and Hazel bought an antique house near the square in Jacksonville and had it moved to the Alex-Jax Hwy. "Hearthstone" sits atop a pine covered hill – a beautiful sight with a lake filled with fish, an old fashioned red barn, with ducks, guineas, hens and roosters roaming the yard.

One of the amazing things about Hazel was that she was never sick and rarely took even an aspirin, never drank, never chewed, never smoked and - often did not mix with those who do! Parties were the love of her life and she threw them on a moment's notice, asking those far and wide to come and join in the fun. Most parties held a theme ie Ground Hog Day, Sadie Hawkins, Tacky Party etc. Special events charmed her and she once staged a Christmas on the Square which included having live angels singing from the roof of the Bank.

After Herschel passed on to Glory, then Lola Dee, Hazel married Frank Rudolph, a retired merchant marine. Four years later she was once again a widow. The DAR, her genealogy love, the lst Baptist church, her Sunday School class (taught by Nancy), her love of writing-poetry...for anything and anyone..all these kept Hazel busy and indeed defined her legacy. On Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at the age of 97, Hazel joined her family in heaven.
