Carroll C. (C.C.) Benson

C.C. died at the age of 95 on August 5, 2010. His death marks the final chapter of faithful service to his wife, Ada, his son, family, friends and his God.

C.C. is survived by his son and his wife; a granddaughter and her family; two step-grandchildren and their respective families, including seven great grandchildren.

C.C. was born on January 29, 1915, the oldest of four brothers.

He was predeceased by his wife of 75 years, Ada, his father, mother, three brothers and their wives.

He was a longtime member of Lake Highlands Baptist Church in Dallas and influenced many people with his strong Christian faith.

C.C. was 12 years old when his father died and as the oldest son, assumed responsibility for many aspects of the family. Through the Great Depression, the family survived by working odd jobs, taking in washing and providing room and board for Petrolia ISD teachers.

After high school, C.C. went to work for the State Mental Hospital in Wichita Falls and there met fellow employee, Ada, the love of his life. They were married in 1934.

In 1937, C.C. left the hospital and went to work for the Texas Highway Patrol, graduating as the President of the Class of '37. C.C. climbed quickly through the ranks until he took leave of absence to enter the U.S. Navy early in WWII.

He spent most of the war in the south Pacific as a Chief Warrant Officer on a troop and ammunition transport ship.

C.C. was discharged from the Navy and returned to the Highway Patrol as the youngest patrolman to attain the rank of Sergeant and supervised the Dallas District office. He was recruited from the Highway Patrol by the National Automobile Theft Bureau and eventually became Manager of the Southwestern Division covering five states and Central and South America. The NATB serves as liaison between police and insurance companies to facilitate the identification of stolen or burned vehicles and other mobile equipment.

C.C. was appointed a Special Texas Ranger by the Texas Legislature and was instrumental in improving international investigation and identification activities. He was a founder of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators, the Texas Association of Vehicle Theft Investigators and was a featured lecturer to police and fire workshops at Texas A&M. C.C. was a former President of the Texas Police Association and active in the Texas Sheriff's Association, and various other national and international law enforcement organizations.

The family will receive friends immediately following the Funeral Service, Monday, August 9, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Sparkman/Crane Funeral Home. Rev. Dan Carroll , officiating. Entombment Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.
