Born in Woodstock, VT, he was a son of Cyrus E. and Emaline A. Staples. He enlisted in Co. H., 7th Vermont Volunteers for the Civil War (along with his brother-in-law, Lucius Wilson). He was discharged due to illness/injury June 22, 1863. He married Miriam A. Manley about 1867 and lived out his life in Rutland, Vermont.
Charles and Miriam had two sons, George W. and Henry Charles Staples.
