MCGILL, ELIZABETH ANNE, age 92. On Friday morning,
November 6, 2009, Elizabeth Anne "Betty" McGill went home to be with Our Father in heaven. Betty was a 29 year resident of the Williamsburg section of Orlando, in south Orange County. Elizabeth Anne Lehmann (McGill) was born on July 13, 1917, in Philadelphia, PA, to Francis and Elizabeth Lehmann. Betty was very well known and respected in her community, mainly because of her activities and employment with the Roman Catholic Church and other volunteer activities. After Betty and her husband,
Donald, retired to Florida from Pennsylvania in 1980, they joined the Catholic Community of Holy Family Parish in the Dr. Phillips section of Orlando. Betty was a premier member of the parish's choir and a cantor for the parish congregation at weekly Masses. She had a mezzo-soprano voice which was requested for many weddings and funerals in the community. She also was a member of the choir at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Queen of the Universe and was cantor for the congregation there, also. As a young adult, Betty had a Sunday singing spot on radio in Philadelphia, PA. In addition to being active as a vocalist in the Church, Betty was a regular participant in a number of volunteer ministries. She was a member of the St. Martin de Porres Society, knitted blankets and hats for newborn babies, was a volunteer at the weekly Miraculous Medal novenas, staffed the information desk at Saturday Masses, served as a Eucharistic minister and volunteered in the Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine's religious gift shop. Betty's community activities included volunteering at the Bay Hill Golf Classic and at the Walt Disney World Golf Tournament. She loved to participate in various types of card games with her friends and neighbors and was considered to be an excellent player in the various forms of the card game Bridge. Later in her life, Betty had an opportunity to travel. She toured the Holy Land with Father Mitch Packwa of E.W.T.N. and went on cruises to Alaska, Hawaii and various parts of the Caribbean. For the past 22 years, after the death of her husband, Betty held a full-time job as the receptionist at Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine. She was the primary contact for callers and visitors to the Shrine and assisted them with their questions and needs. She also coordinated the activities of the volunteers who prepared mailings to the Shrine's international list of members and contributors. Betty worked at this position until February of this year, when her struggles with illness began. Betty is survived by four children, Carol McGill(William Echmann) of Huntsville, AR, J. Michael McGill(Karen McGill) of Orlando, FL, Donald McGill (Corinne McGill) of Neptune, NJ, and Donna McGill of Jacksonville, FL. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Kelly Kipper, Kenny Kipper, Jennifer McGill, Patrick McGill and Laura McGill. Betty has one surviving sister, Sister M. Conradine Lehmann of the Saint Joseph Sisters in Levittown, PA. Her husband, Donald, predeceased her in 1986. In memory of Elizabeth Anne McGill, there will be a public viewing at Woodlawn Memorial Funeral Home in Gotha, FL, on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a memorial fund at The Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe, 8300 Vineland Avenue, Orlando, Florida 32821, (407) 239-6600.
