He was son of Dr. John P. Stewart and Margaret Dowling Stewart. He attended public schools of Frankfort, KY., and Culver Military Academy at Culver, IN. In 1920 he graduated from Haverford School at Haverford, PA., and after graduation joined his father at The Stewart Home School, acting as Supt. of the institution. After his father's death he became director of the Stewart Home School. His wife was Emma Witherspoon, and he was the father of Jean Hall and John Poage II.
