June C. Castner, who helped found Hospice of Lancaster County and was an active community volunteer, died Wednesday in Lancaster General Hospital. A family spokesman said the cause of death was lung cancer. She was 75 and resided at 203 Country Place Drive.

For the past four years Mrs. Castner was a receptionist for Lancaster Newspapers Inc. Earlier, she served as director of volunteers for the Hospice. Her career included a stint with Head Start of Lancaster in the 1980s and a period as a real estate agent in the 1970s.

Before that, she was a social worker for many years for Lancaster General Hospital. She began her career as a sixth-grade teacher at St. Anne's Elementary School.

A dedicated member of the Town and Garden Club of Lancaster, Mrs. Castner served as its president in the 1960s and 1970s. She also served on the board of the United Way in Lancaster, chairing residential gift-giving.

In 1988, she led local residential fund-raising for George H.W. Bush's presidential campaign.

In her later years, Mrs. Castner was a model with the Mary Bowman agency, appearing in local television and print ad campaigns. In 1989 and 1999, she was a census taker for the U.S. Census Bureau.

She was a member of the Iris Club, serving as an officer, and volunteered for more than 20 years as a tour guide for Historic Lancaster Walking Tours. As a young mother, she had been a Cub Scout den mother.

A tennis player for many years, she was a former member of the Lancaster Riding and Tennis Club. She also enjoyed playing contract bridge and competed in local and national tournaments since the 1950s.

Also, she enjoyed racing her beloved Jack Russell terrier, Dodger, in local and regional competitions.

Mrs. Castner was a 1947 graduate, with a bachelor of arts degree in home economics, from Carnegie Mellon University, where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. She later earned a teaching certificate from Millersville University.

Born in Pittsburgh, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Anne Henderson Clarke. She was married to Richard Thomas Castner, who died in 1990.

Surviving are a daughter, Catherine, married to Richard Swords of Jarretsville, Md.; three sons, Richard T. Jr., married to Jacquelyn S. Castner of Camp Hill, Thomas C., married to Joanne C. Castner of Lancaster, and Paul E., married to Deborah Castner of Atlanta; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Charles, married to Cecilia Clarke of Sewickley; a half brother; and two half sisters.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Robert Clarke.
