BARR, ROBERT EDWARD SR., MD, Dr. Bob Barr was born in Birmingham on January 31, 1936, to Alton and Mildred Barr.

CORDELE—Dr. Robert Barr, former Cordele physician, has died at the age of 70 in Birmingham, AL. He had suffered from pancreatic cancer.

He and his wife, Jean, moved to Cordele where he was in private practice from 1967 to 1984. He worked in emergency medicine until 1989.

Barr also served as Crisp County medical officer for several years.

He was born in Birmingham, AL Jan. 31, 1936, and later attended Birmingham public schools, the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama Medical school.

After completing his internship and residency in Columbus, he served as a lieutenant, flight surgeon, in the Navy for two and a half years.

Barr and his wife Jean moved to Birmingham in 1989 where he continued some emergency medical practice. After retiring, he became associated with Aladdin Cleaners, a family owned business.

Barr was a longtime member of the American Academy of Family Practice, Rotary International, Asbury United Methodist Church and Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was one of the original founders and served for 20 years as a director of Central Bank and Trust, currently Ameris.

He and his wife Jean had two sons, Robert Edward Barr Jr. and Timothy Alton Barr Sr. in Birmingham and one daughter, Jeanie Christmas in Cordele. He had five grandchildren, Robert Edward Barr lll, Lucy Manning Barr, Timothy Alton Barr Jr., Molly Cathryn Barr all of Birmingham and Amy Jean Brown of Cordele. Dr. Barr had one brother, James Richard Barr Sr. of Birmingham, two sisters, Anne Barr Herman of Suwanee, Georgia and Jane Ellen Barr of Salisbury,North Carolina.

Barr's wife Jean died of lung cancer in 2004. He and Beverly McCay of Cordele married on September 10, 2005.

Barr was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last spring. He had undergone several radiation and chemo treatments. He and Beverly visited M.D. Anderson cancer clinic in Dallas, and then went to the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland for surgery. Dr. Robert Edward Barr Sr. died at 3:25 Thursday morning. He was at his home in Birmingham with wife Beverly at the time of his death. Funeral services will be held Asbury United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama at 2 p.m. Saturday with private burial in Forest Hills cemetery.
