John T. "Jake" Carroll, 89, of Hillsborough, N.J., formerly of Shenandoah, died Feb. 7 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Somerville, N.J.
Born in Shenandoah, May 8, 1926, he was a son of the late Thomas Fabian and Winifred Fallon Carroll.
A graduate of Shenandoah Catholic High School, Jake played on the football team. He was a steam and pipefitter for 40 years with the Warren, N.J. Pipefitters Local Union 475, attaining life membership in the International Union.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
In his free time, Jake was active in the American Legion Post 12, Somerville, N.J., and served as both commander and past commander. Jake also was an avid sportsman who enjoyed many trips to his hunting cabin in Nova Scotia, Canada.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Joseph "Coke," Thomas and Francis "Chang" Carroll; three sisters, Catherine "Kit" O'Donnell, Marie Ambrulavage and Eileen Sullivan; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Wells Bentz; a nephew, Joseph Carroll II.
Surviving are a sister, Emily Maruzek, Williamsport; his former wife, Dorothy Carroll; stepson-in-law, David Bentz, Omaha, Neb.; four nieces and seven nephews; 18 great-nieces and -nephews.
A scripture service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oravitz Home for Funerals Inc., 40 N. Jardin St., Shenandoah, with Monsignor Ronald Bocian officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Annunciation BVM Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Contributions in John's memory may be made to the American Heart or Lung Association . Oravitz Home for Funerals Inc. has been entrusted with the arrangements.
