Trooper Dermyer leaves behind a wife and two children. He served 4 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and was previously a Newport News Police officer. He was 37 years old. Before moving to Virginia, he served as a Jackson City, Michigan police officer [2008 to 2011].
He was recently transferred to the department's counterterrorism and criminal interdiction unit.
