Dr. John Mabie Hasbrouck, of Garnerville, died Thursday in the Poughkeepsie Hospital, aged 71 years.

He had practiced in Rockland County since the time of his graduation in medicine and in March next would have been feted by the Rockland County Medical Society on his fiftieth anniversary as a practitioner.

Dr. Hasbrouck was born in West Haverstraw, a son of Dr. Josiah Hasbrouck and Ellen J. Blauvelt Hasbrouck. He received his education in the public schools and was graduated from Rockland Institute, Nyack. He studied at both the College of Physicians and Surgeons and Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York City, received his diploma from the latter institution in 1884.

He served six months in the ambulance department of Bellevue.

Dr. Hasbrouck located in West Haverstraw in September 1864. He was a member of the Rockland County Medical Society and had served as an officer. In 1897-99 he served as county treasurer of Rockland County.

He was mayor of the village of West Haverstraw for several terms and had been health officer of tbe village for many years. He made an unsuccessful run for the office of supervisor in Haverstraw some years ago. He had been a member of the Garnerville school board for several terms and was vice president and a director of the National Bank of Haverstraw and Trust Co.

With his brother and other members of the family, Dr. Hasbrouck was one of the of the owners of the once famous chain ferry across the Rondout Creek at Kingston, which went out of operation several years ago when the highway bridge was built across the creek.

Dr. Hasbrouck was noted for his charitable work in the community in which he lived. Besides attending to his praetice, he was the owner of Garnerville's only drug store, from which point many residents of the community were made beneficiaries of his benevolences.

He also was interested in fraternities and was a member of several organizations including the Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and others.

Dr. Hasbrouck was unmarried. A surviving brother is Supreme Court Judge Hasbrouck of Ulster County.
