Henry Guy Carleton was born at Fort Union, a frontier post (1851–1891) in New Mexico, to James Henry Carleton and Sophie Garland Wolfe Carleton. He participated in campaigns against the Kiowas and Arapahoes along the Rio Grande River during the Comanche Campaign.

Henry resigned from the army in 1876 to become a newspaper reporter, later achieving success as a writer, actor and inventor. His writings included "A Daughter of Uncle Sam", "The Phantom Honeymoon", "Advice to Young Anglers", "Life at Sing Sing", and "Lectures Before the Thompson Street Poker Club".

Carleton worked as a playwright, having five plays produced for the Broadway stage from 1894-1899. His most successful plays were "A Gilded Fool" and "Butterflies". Other plays included "The butterflies, a comedy in three acts", "The Lion's Mouth", and "Memnon : a tragedy in five acts".

Henry graduated from Santa Clara College. He invented several electrical devices and was granted patents in the U.S. and Canada.

His mother, Sophie Garland Wolfe Carleton was born May 5, 1830 in Virginia and died Aug. 16, 1880 in Santa Barbara, California. His sister, Eva Carleton Moore, was born Sept. 30, 1852 in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Other siblings, Guy Grayson (1853-1856) and Agnes Maude ( -1861), died in infancy.

Henry Guy Carleton was married at least three times, all ending in divorce.
First wife was Helen Sinclair Hubbard, married January 7, 1885 (Manhattan, New York, New York), divorced March 1, 1889. She was the daughter of William H. and Fanny (Garr) Hubbard of Staten Island.
Second wife was Effie Shannon, married April 1890, divorced October 1892.
Third wife was another actress, Olive May, married June 21, 1894, divorced filed in September 1898.
