Dr. Cosper was the oldest of eight children. Dr. Cosper had been a minister since 1934 when the Regular Baptist Church in Smethport, Pa., had licensed him to the ministry. He retired in 1983 following 10 years as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Williamsport. Since that time and following heart surgery and cancer treatment, he has served interim pastorates in Vermont, (including First Baptist, Bristol), New York State and Pennsylvania.

When he was 20 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for four years as a radio operator on a U.S.S. Wyoming. During his naval experience he had made arrangements with the help of his pastor to enroll in Eastern Baptist College in 1940. He graduated from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1946. Upon completion of his studies at seminary he was ordained and served churches in Camden and Keystone NJ for 9 years. Dr. Cosper received the degree of Master of Divinity from the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary and the degree of Master of Sacred Theology from the Lutheran Theological Seminary of Philadelphia.

He was called to be the minister of the Greenwood Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York City, N.Y., beginning 20 Mar 1955 where he served for 10 years. While there the church celebrated their 100th anniversary and he wrote an exhaustive history of the church as part of his thesis at the Lutheran Theological Seminary. He was able to take Pastoral Clinical Education at the Methodist Hospital of Brooklyn. He was elected by the Board of Managers of the Samaritan Hospital of Brooklyn to be the chaplain of the hospital and Director of social work. By continuing training for social work he took studies at New York University and also at Adelphia University on Long Island. As an additional training for his work he became a member of the National Association of social Workers and also a member of the Association of Professional Chaplains.

He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity by the Eastern Baptist Seminary in 1963. He served as President of the Brooklyn Division of the Council of Churches of New York City. He also served as president of the Alumni Association of Eastern Baptist Seminary. He served on the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Baptist Convention and also on the Board of Managers of the Metropolitan Baptist Churches of New York.

While in Brooklyn, he served as an interviewer on the Help Line Telephone Center at the Marble Collegiate Church. He was a member of the Lions Club where he served on a committee to help assist people finishing their prison term to find employment. While in New York and Pennsylvania he was active in the Kiwanis Club.

He was an avid reader and collector with a particular interest in Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. He also loved photography and stamp collecting. Active throughout his life in sports, he continued to enjoy golfing and bowling most recently. He also continued to volunteer throughout his life, serving for several years as a volunteer in ministry at the Rose View Center in Williamsport as part of his role as Pastor Emeritus at First Baptist Church in Williamsport.

He is survived by his daughter, Cari Ann Cioffi and her husband Chip of Harrisburg. He survived his wife of 69 years, Erma Mack Cosper, by three months and two days. He is also survived by two sisters, Millicent Mejea of Delmont, Pa., and Kathryn Shay of Portville, N.Y., numerous nieces and nephews and six grandcats.

The funeral service will be held at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond St., Williamsport. The visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. and the funeral at 11 a.m. on Monday. Officiating, from her home church, First Baptist Church, Williamsport, will be the Rev. Gwen Bernstine, who will be joined by the Rev. Lois Yeagle of White Deer Valley Baptist Church. Burial will be at Twin Hills Memorial Park.
