Born in Brownfield, Samuel first moved to Portland, then to Boston, next to Buenos Aries for several years and then back to Portland. He and his nephew Andrew established the A. & S.E. Spring Co., which exported lumber and imported South American hides. In additional to his successful business, Samuel was involved in Portland city government, served in the Maine legislature, and was on the Board of Directors for several business such as the Atlantic & St. Lawrence Railroad, and the Portland Water Company. In 1854-55, Samuel and Andrew had Italianate houses, which still exist, built next to each other at the corner of Danforth and Emery Streets. -provided by Friends of Evergreen.

On the left side are the names of Spring siblings Edward Evans (1850-1877), Eliphalet G. (1859-1895), Grace (1852-1854), and Anne Spring Lynch (1841-1917) who appears to be the only sibling born in Buenos Aries and was the second wife of John Lynch.
