Istvan Buchler (or Buchlar) was born on April 16, 1881 in the town of Glogonj, which is now in the Vojvodina provence of modern Serbia, when it was still part of Austria-Hungary. His parents were Stephanus Buchler (1847-1935) and Elisabetha Scherer (1848-1895). He was a blacksmith by trade and married Theresia Benrath (or Benrod) (1888-1963) in Glogonj in 1902 and had a daughter, Barbara, born in Glogonj in 1903. They immigrated to the U.S. in early 1905. There is one record from the immigration/ New York Passenger Lists that Buchler arrived from Fiume, Croatia (today known as Rijeka) on the ship 'Carpathia', the same ship that would later rescue survivors of the 'Titanic' sinking in 1912.
The Buchler family settled in Los Angeles, California. His name eventually evolved to 'Steven Beechler'. Together, Steven and Theresa had about 14 children. Steven appeared to have separated from Theresa in the mid-1930s and moved to Santa Barbara. He later settled in Oxnard, California in his retirement years. Steven Beechler died on March 16, 1964.
