He leaves his wife of 16 years, Margaret A. (Milligan) Matthews; two daughters, Prudence A. Bourque of Leominster and Cynthia L. Jeannotte of Townsend; three sisters, Jesse Hawkins of Fitchburg, Alice Sanborn of Leominster and Charlotte Rollo of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and five grandchildren. His first wife, Wilma N. (Smith) Matthews, died in 1980. He was born in Quebec, the son of Clinton and Agnes (Kingborough) Matthews. He lived here for the past 25 years.
Mr. Matthews worked at Simmonds Saw & Steel Co. for 33 years as a supervisor, before retiring in 1977. He was a member of Townsend Congregational Church, the Caleb Butler Lodge of Masons in Ayer, Retired Men's Club of Fitchburg and Townsend Couples Club.
The funeral will be held Tuesday from the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 250 Main St., with a service at 2 p.m. in the Townsend Congregational Church. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Townsend. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Central Massachusetts, 35 Harvard St., Worcester, MA 01609.
