SALEM — Dr. John Harold Liggett, DVM, 78, of 1977 Depot Road, Salem, died at 10:07 p.m. Saturday at the Salem Community Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born May 24, 1928 in Cadiz, the son of the late John Patterson and Helen C. (Christopher) Liggett.

Dr. Liggett operated the Dr. John H. Liggett Veterinary Clinic where he practiced for 50 years, treating large and small animals and from which he recently retired.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Salem and 1946 graduate of Cadiz High School. John attended Dennison University and is a 1954 graduate of the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, American Veterinary Medical Association, member and trustee of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, E.O.V.M.A., member of the Ohio State Alumni Association President's Club, Buckeye Club and the Salem Golf Club. John served in the U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Joan (Rowland) Liggett, whom he married June 23, 1951; three daughters, Becky Liggett of Casa Grande, AZ, Ann Liggett of Sarasota, FL and Emily (Jeff) Wagner of Canfield; and two grandchildren, Jonathon and Maggie Wagner, both of Canfield.

Preceding him in death was a brother, Dr. Thomas W. Liggett, DVM.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. John Besore III officiating. A private family burial will be held Wednesday at Grandview Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the church.
