Daughter of Don Antonio Mendez and Felicite Ducret (Ducres, Ducre)

Mother of:
Dr. Emile Pierre Sarpy
Aimee Adelaide Celestine Sarpy Guex
Jean B. Sarpy 1817-1820
Marie A. Sarpy 1820-1823
Leon Henry Irenee (Rene') Sarpy b. 1822
Felicie Sarpy 1833-1914

NOTE: Information for this burial is from the index of burials for the cemetery that was done in the 1930's. This gives her name as "Dame Jean Baptiste Sarpy, nee' Dlle Elizabeth Carmelite Mendez, Native of New Orleans, Daughter of Don Antonio Mendez, Died Aug 25, 1833 Aged 36 years"

However, family records indicate that her name was Maria Carmelita, Maria del Carmen, or Marie Carmelite, and that she was born about 1798. The Spanish form (Maria Carmelita) was the likely spelling at the time of her birth, as this was during the period of Spanish rule in Louisiana, while the obituary notice of 1833 says "Marie Carmelite". This memorial uses the Spanish form in the absence of any tablet or inscription.
