Minerva Jane Cornell was the second child of Larkin Cornell and Mary Thomas. She was born in Pontotoc County, MS around November of 1849. She is 8 months old per 1850 census enumeration date of June 1850 (1850 Census). Later records are inaccurate when stating she was born 2-3 years later.

When her mother died, Minerva and her sister Stacy Elizabeth lived with their grandparents, Solomon and Elizabeth Thomas, first in Marion, AL (1860 Census), then in McNairy, TN (1870 Census).

McNairy County, TN is located just across the northern MS state line and borders Alcorn County, MS. Minerva must have met her future husband Thomas Babb in McNairy where they both lived as neighbors in 1870. This was in an area around the towns of Selmer and Purdy.

Thomas Babb’s father, Green, died in the Civil War, and his children, including Thomas, ended up living with the Fitzpatrick family, who were their neighbors before the Civil War. They appear in the same place (District 9) as the Solomon Thomas family (1870 Census).

Minerva and Thomas were married 16 Feb 1876 in Alcorn, MS and settled in McNairy County. Thomas J. Babb was the son of Green Berry Babb (1811-1862) and Mary Jane Broom (1834-1916) of McNairy County.

Their children were MARTHA ELIZABETH [BABB] NORTH (1882-1972) and CLAUDE MAY BABB (1886-1943)
