Earned his Bachelor's degree from Colgate University in 1895, his Master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1911, and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Colgate.

He was the principal of Grand Rapids Central High School, started the GR Jaycees in 1909, and in 1914 became the first president of GR Junior College, now GR Community College. He went on to become a Professor of Education at Boston University in 1924 and Dean of Education from 1935-1942. He retired from Boston University in 1951. He is considered one of the founders of the vocational guidance profession.

He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Delta Kappa educational honor society, and the Delta Upsilon fraternity.

The 1929 Boston University yearbook describes him as follows: "Uncle Jabey is our idea of an ideal grammar school principal. We can see him running races with the boys and quietly extracting written contracts of attendance from the girls. Besides, we have it on good authority that he's a genial soul."

He was married to Lillian B Davis.
