John S. Babbitt of Berwyn, Pa.

John Shirley Babbitt passed away on March 4, 2016. He was born on March 22, 1919, son of Grover and Emma Babbitt. He was the oldest of 8 children.

He was the loving husband of Muriel Nolan Babbitt with whom he shared 68 years of marriage and who preceded him in death.

John, born on the family farm, walked to a one room schoolhouse, and graduated from the New York State College of Agriculture at Alfred in 1940. His career started selling Massey-Harris farm equipment.

He was drafted in 1941 into the U.S. Army. John was commissioned as a medic on the hospital ship, The St Mihiel.

Traveling between assignments, he met Muriel Nolan, a USO hostess at Camp Shanks. They married on December 16, 1944.

John made 20 trips across the Atlantic Ocean on the hospital ship. He was honorably discharged on October 7, 1945, earning these medals: American Defense, American Theater Campaign, Good Conduct, European-African Campaign and World War II Victory Medals.

After discharge, John began his farming career of 38 years on the Babbitt family homestead. His farm was one of the first to begin strip cropping to improve soil and harvest and was recognized by The Farm Bureau as "Farm of the Year".

John is survived by his children, John Babbitt, and Stephen Babbitt of NY, and Susan (Allan) De Jong of Berwyn, PA. He had 8 grandchildren including local grandchildren (Laura) De Jong, and Kaitlyn (Bradley) Garner, and 15 great grandchildren.

John was an avid stamp collector and was a member of the American Philatelic Society. He belonged to several stamp clubs and was an avid reader with an impressive collection of World War II books. He was one of "America's Greatest Generation".

Memorial donations may be made to Great Valley Presbyterian Church, where John was a member.

John's Celebration of Life service will take place on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 11 am, at Great Valley Presbyterian Church, Malvern, PA

Interment of John S. Babbitt and Muriel Nolan Babbitt will be June 18, 2016, in the family plot at Podonque Cemetery, Rushford, NY.
