Alice Arnold was born in DC while her father served in Congress. During the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 her mother Harriet fled with her to Evanston when the family home was surrendered to the flames, and there they were reunited the following day with the rest of the family which had found refuge by a lighthouse on the lakeshore and eventually rescued by a tugboat. Her marriage to Dr. Joseph Hooper was described in the Chicago Tribune on July 1, 1886, page 5.
