John Barnes was born on 10 May 1820 [calculated from his headstone, his US Civil War Registration shows 10 Jan 1820] in Harrison, West Virginia to Henry and Catherine (Cunningham) Barnes.

About 1830 the family moved to Richland County, Ohio near Sandusky. About 1837 the family moved to Crawford County, Ohio.

John married Elvira Love on 30 Mar 1843 in Miami, Miami, Indiana. They had 5 children:

Per "The Past and Present of Warren County, IL" dated 1877, John was a farmer and stock raiser living on Section 24 in Tompkins Township, Monmouth, Warren, IL. He was a Republican and a "Lib Meth" (Methodist Episcopal Church). He owned 290 acres worth $17,400. He held the offices of School Director and Overseer of Highways. His wife Elizabeth Jane Monroe was born in Tennessee and they had nine children of which 2 were dead by 1877.

According to "Portrait and Biographical Album of Warren County, IL" dated 1886, John was a member of the IOOF and of the Order of Masonry.

John died at the age of 71 on 23 Aug 1891 in Monomouth Township, Warren, Illinois.
