He was a Republican and a "Lib Meth" (Methodist Episcopal Church). He owned 290 acres worth $17,400. He held the offices of School Director and Overseer of Highways. His wife Elizabeth Jane Monroe was born in Tennessee and they had nine children of which 2 were dead by 1877.
According to "Portrait and Biographical Album of Warren County, IL" dated 1886, John was a member of the IOOF and of the Order of Masonry.
John died at the age of 71 on 23 Aug 1891 in Monomouth Township, Warren, Illinois.
