OBITUARY.

LADY VON HAAST. Mr H. F. von Haast, of Wellington, received word by cable on Tuesday of the death on July 28th, at Rome, of his mother. Lady von Haast, of arteriosclerosis. Lady von Haast, who was in her 70th year, was the eldest daughter of the late Mr Edward Dobson, C.E., of Christchurch, one of the Canterbury pilgrims, and the widow of the late Sir Julius von Haast. She was a woman of strong character and wide culture, and an accomplished pianiste, whose home in the seventies and eighties was a rallying point for musicians. She was also of considerable assistance to her husband in revising his publications. Recovering from a long illness after the death of Sir Julius, she went in 1896 to Europe and travelled extensively in Russia, Poland, Austria, Romania, and Italy. Vienna had been for several years her head-quarters, where the friendship that had been formed in the early days of New Zealand between Sir Julius von Haast and the late Dr. von Hochstetter, the director of the Natural History Museum in Vienna, was continued by their widows. During her stay in Vienna Lady von Haast devoted herself largely to musical and linguistic studies.
