With his devoted children, Don faced the challenges of advanced age with humor and resilience.
As a young child, Don grew up in Modesto, California, but at age seven went to live with his grandparents on their farm in Granger. He loved the farm, as it taught him to work hard and play hard with his many aunts and uncles. At age eighteen, Don was drafted in the Army, and was released due to a combat injury that occurred while training.
He married LaRue Rowley on December 11, 1952; later divorced.
Don worked for the United States Postal Service, receiving a special award for his excellent and dedicated service of thirty-one years.
Dad's additional interests included gardening, skiing, aviation, shadow boxing, watching reruns of Seinfeld, and taking an occasional trip to Wendover. We will miss his sweet hugs, selfless and generous nature, and his dry, witty sense of humor.
He is survived by five children, Terry (Craig) Stevens, Tracy (Stan) Finn, Cindy (John) Ostlund, Sandra (Kerry) Ashby, and David (Allan) Langton; twenty grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren (with three more on the way!), and three aunts (who were more like sisters), Ruth Johnson, Cleo Barthule, and Helen (Shorland) Hunsaker.
Our family would like to thank 5 Star Home Health and Care Source for their loving attention they gave our dad these past few months.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at Valley View Funeral Home, 4335 West 4100 South, West Valley City. A viewing will be held prior to the services from 9:45-10:45 a.m.
