Roland White was a City Police Officer for Los Angeles, California. He served the Police Force for three years, dying in the line of duty at age 26. On May 2nd, 1950, he answered a call with his partner, concerning a breaking and entering on 110th Street. When they arrived, they were informed that a woman came to the home which belonged to her sister, to seek refuge for her and her children from her drunken, raging, out-of-control husband. The husband followed her to the home, trying to kick in the door, but left when he didn't succeed. The woman said it was likely he was at his favorite hang-out, a Tavern at the intersection of 109th Street and Avalon Boulevard. The Officers went to that location and located the man in a phone booth inside the back of the seedy Tavern. They requested that he accompany them outside and he agreed to go. As they started for the front door the man produced a .45 caliber handgun and ordered the Officers to drop their weapons. Officer White lunged at the man to subdue him, but the man opened fire, striking him in the stomach 5 times. One round struck Officer White's Partner in the leg. The man fled, as the Bartender grabbed Officer White's service weapon and returned fire. Officer White's partner crawled out to his squad car to radio for assistance A massive manhunt was launched, the man was located a short time later at a Service Station. After a short standoff, the gunman exited the Service Station, and fatally shot himself in the chest. Officer White died at the hospital 9 days later. He was survived by a wife and son.

Roland married Kathryn Alice Knowlin in California. They had a son Roland E.(Rollie) White, Jr.
