Mrs. Jane Allen, widow of the late, Major Allen, of Grimsby, passed away at her home, on Robinson St. S., on Saturday evening, Feb. 24th, at the age of 83 years.
Mrs. Allen had lived in the Township of North Grimsby and the village of Grimsby, for over 31 years, coming here from England, with her husband, the late, Major Allen and family. The deceased lady was a daughter of the late John Weedon, barrister and solicitor of Reading, Berkshire, England. She was married about 60 years ago to her late husband, who was then in office of the Leichestershire Regiment.
Before the late American war, Capt. Allen and his wife, came to Quebec, where the Captain was stationed and where they remained for about five years, returning to England, when Capt. Allen received his appointment as Major, and was appointed governor of military prisons, being stationed in Scotland, Ireland, and other points up to the time when he resigned his position and came to Canada.
She is survived by four sons: Hugh of Hamilton, and Harry, Charlie and Jack of Buffalo, N.Y.; and five daughters: Mrs. Coryn, of San Diego, CA., Mrs. W.H.Nelles and Mrs. A.R. Whitelaw, of Grimsby, Mrs. H.F. Vidal, of Beamsville, and Mrs. Rhodes of Ottawa.
The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, to Queen's Lawn Cemetery, the Rev. J. Allan Ballard, officiating.
