Michael Lynn Akers, 48, of Newton, died Tuesday (Oct. 14, 2014) at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

He was born on Aug. 25, 1966, in Newton, the son of Eldon Eugene and Marian Ruth Orpin Akers. Mike was raised in Newton, attending local schools where he was a part of the track team, graduating from Newton High School in 1984. He later attended Hutchinson Jr. College and Emporia State University.

After graduating from Emporia State, Mike went to work in Wichita at Boeing Aircraft, Cessna Aircraft and later at Manufacturing Solutions in Newton. He then went to Butler County College and received a nursing degree, after which he went to work at the Newton Medical Center, Prairie View and most recently Asbury Park.

Mike was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed woodworking and loved to spend time with his family. He took great pride in doing things by himself.

Survivors include his daughter and her husband, his son; parents; brother and his wife all of Newton; and sister of Wichita.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 18, 2014) at the First Church of God at Fairview and Broadway in Newton. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday 1 until 8 p.m., where the family will receive friends between 7 and 8 p.m. Friday evening. Friends can also stop by the funeral home Saturday between 8 a.m. and noon.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association; contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.
