ABNER TOPPAN, (Some later generations use the spelling Tappan), was born on 6 April 1764 in Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts to Edward Toppan and Sarah Bailey-Toppan (Tappan).
Abner was a skilled carpenter and cabinet maker who crafted furniture and cabinets frequently utilizing mahogany wood. After his first child was born, Abner returned to Newburyport, Massachusetts, and resided with his wife, Elizabeth Stanford on the east side of High Street near Toppan's Lane.
Abner married Elizabeth Stanford on 30 January 1792 in Easton, Dorchester County, Maryland, and they had EIGHT children of record:
Sophia Toppan-Crocker (1792-1840),
William Stanford Toppan (1795- ?),
Abner Toppan (1797 - 1843),
Richard Stanford Toppan (1799 - ),
Elizabeth "Betsey" Toppan-Ruggles (1801-1874),
Arianna Toppan-Thompson (1803-1881),
George Toppan (1807-1857), and
Harriet Maria Toppan-Haskell (1810-1886).
Abner passed away on 31 December 1836 in Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts, and he was laid to rest there at First Parish Burying Ground.
