Cape Canaveral

To my family and friends, it is with great sorrow that I announce the passing of my husband, Dr. Paul C. Verhagen, 87 of Cape Canaveral, FL Saturday, July 11, 2015. Born in Chicago, IL Paul grew up in Elkhart, IN. He was one of five children and always said he had the perfect childhood. He was part of a "gang" of athletes called the Riverside Rats. Who were a group of neighborhood boys who played softball, baseball and dabbled in track. They even built their own club house! He went on to be a star athlete at Elkhart High School - excelling in many sports - baseball being his favorite. He went to Western Michigan for baseball, then to Illinois College of Optometry, where he had a chance to work out with the White Sox. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He managed his son's Khoury league team that won 64 games straight in Belleville, IL.

Paul served in the United States Air Force Bioscience Medical Corps as an Optometrist for 22 years. After retiring as a Lt. Col. He joined "Optometric Practice", a private practice in Alton, IL and worked for 20 years before full retirement.

He was a doubles and singles tennis champion at Fairchild AFB in 1962. He loved to play golf and poker, go to the movies and most of all spend time with his family. He was on the golf team at Tindall AFB in Panama City, FL and at Harmond AFB in Stevensville, Newfoundland. He was a member of Cocoa Beach Community Church.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia June Verhagen of Cape Canaveral, FL; daughter, Dr. Vireca Verhagen of Denver, CO; son, Dirk Verhagen of Houston, TX; sister, Laverne Steck of Pelham, NH; brother, Dr. Roger Verhagen of North Judson, IN; grandchildren, Alexis V. Haggerty and Logan V. Verhagen.

He is preceded in death by his father, Christian M. Verhagen, who was born and educated in the Netherlands; his mother, Marie Verhagen; his brother, Don Verhagen, a B-24 pilot killed in action in WWII; his sister, Jean Hagan, who was nominated for best supporting actress in "Singing in the Rain", the sitcom "Make Room for Daddy" with Danny Thomas and many other movies.

He will be remembered for his love and dedication to family and country. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the "Wounded Warrior Project".

A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home in Cocoa Beach.
