Federal Judge, South Carolina. Sol Blatt Jr. was appointed a federal judge in 1971 and took senior status in 1990. In 2006 he became the longest serving Federal Judge in South Carolina's history. Solomon "Sol" Blatt Jr. died at age 94 at his Charleston home Wednesday evening, April 20, 2016. He was born in Barnwell County in 1921 and was the son of powerful SC State Rep. Solomon Blatt, Sr. who served in the State House for 53 years. He was predeceased by his late wife Carolyn Gayden Blatt. He is survived a son: Gregory G. Blatt of Greenville, SC and their two daughters, Molly Blatt of Charleston and Hannah Blatt of Denver, CO; daughter: Sheryl Blatt Hooper and her husband Tee Hooper of Greenville, SC and their two children, Travis Hooper and his wife, Meg, of Greenville; Amy H. White and her husband, Marshall, of Winston Salem, NC; son: Brian L. Blatt and his wife, Martha of Columbia, SC and their son, Lee Blatt and his wife, Juleah of Blythewood; great-granddaughters: Ridley, Shelton, Grace and Lisa; and great-grandson: Hudson. Memorials in his honor may be made to the Ministerial Association of the Church of the Holy Apostles, 9357 Patterson Street, Barnwell, SC 29812; or the Solomon Blatt Scholarship Fund at the University of South Carolina, in care of University Foundations, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC 29208; or to the cause or charity of one’s choice. There was a visitation on Saturday afternoon, April 23, 2016 from 4 to 6 PM at the U. S. District Courthouse, 85 Broad Street, Charleston. A graveside service was performed at 2 PM on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at the Church of the Holy Apostles, 9357 Patterson Street, Barnwell, his hometown. A celebration of Blatt’s life was held from 6 to 8 PM on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at 701 Sweetbriar Road in Columbia.
