Alvin Wilbur Caulkins was the oldest surviving son of Orin and Sarah Loomis Caulkins who later settled in Kossuth Co. Iowa. Alvin married twice, first to Isabelle Roan and had several children with her. The marriage failed and in 1890 he married Flora May Robinson, not Cora, and lived with her in Mountain View.

Enlisted as a corporal on 20 Feb 1862 and on 20 Feb 1862 and was mustered into Co. D, 18th Wisconsin Infantry. He was wounded on 22 May 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Mustered out on 18 Jul 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.

The 18th Wisconsin Infantry saw action at Shiloh, TN; Corinth, MS; Jackson, MS; Champion Hills, MS; Vicksburg, MS; Acworth, GA; Allatoona, GA; and Kinston, NC.
